NYT’s new social gadfly

The New York Times has appointed a new Social Media Editor, Jennifer Preston. Here, via Nieman Journalism Lab, is the internal announcement. “What’s that? It’s someone who concentrates full-time on expanding the use of social media networks and publishing platforms to improve New York Times journalism and deliver it to readers.” She is an experienced journalist, and the memo is worth reading to see the growing group of people that such a person must work with. As some of you will have seen, the WSJ has recently updated its social media rules, and others are dealing with the same phenomenon; the Director general of the BBC has pointed out that it is hard to separate personal and “official” use of such media. But the NYT has swiftly jumped on speculation that Preston’s job is to be a “twitter cop.”
