New Washington Post Foreign Editor’s plans

The new foreign editor of the Washington Post plans new staff in the Middle East. “We will have at least half of our correspondents in the area from Jerusalem to Beijing,” said Doug Jehl, who took over the foreign editor post from David Hoffman last month. “We are thinking through some of our deployments.” The quotes come from Editor and Publisher.

The task of allotting staff to the world when you have only a dozen or two people is an interesting one. What Jehl’s comments seem likely to mean is yet fewer resources for Western Europe and Latin America. See the current line-up here.

The Post is having a tough time. The newspaper division of The Post Co. lost $143 million through the first six months of this year, the company said recently.
